Glenn Hauser logs January 16-17, 2018

** ALBANIA [non]. 5850, Jan 16 at 2300.5, Brazilian song music fill, no show of Radio Tirana relay. At 2306 playing the Bahamas promotional song in English. Checking since Mark Coady also noticed Tirana absent on Jan 12. I`ve notified Jeff White about this. A Spanish ID by Dino ran at 2300.0, following some music, following a gospel huxtress in English poorly recorded on amateur equipment (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 9665.004, Jan 16 at 0714, Voz Missionária hugging the nominal, S9-S5 and well audible with some nice lively songs, for wake-up time after 5 am local. Much better than 9675- or any other ZY on the band (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15580, 15509, 15440, 15300, 15230, 15162, 15093, 15032, Jan 16 at 1519, cursory check for the RHC FM/whine blobs today, frequencies very approximate and not much modulation, out of the 15370-AM transmitter, nothing to do with the other one intentionally on 15230. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KIRITIMATI. 846, Jan 16 at 0729, JBA carrier from R. Kiribati (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SAUDI ARABIA. 9695.027, Jan 16 at 1441, OK modulation with music and talk, S6-S4, so it seems BSKSA has finally fixed the transmitter which had been blasting nothing but humbuzz for a long time; in fact, I think I ran across that yesterday or ante-yesterday but didn`t relog it. It`s the listed Pashtu service which I did log as humbuzz on Dec 29 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9455 // 9955, Tue Jan 16 at 1438, WRMI is replaying `Viva Miami` interview with Allan Weiner. (Mon/Wed/Thu/Sat it`s scheduled at 1445, only on Tue at 1430.) At the question of what he thinx of DRM? Maybe it will catch on in 5 years. Think he said a WBCQ unit is DRM-capable.

I continue to be amazed that not a single SW station inside the USA will even test DRM, or run it half an hour a week as a token. But Alokesh Gupta forwards news that KTWR GUAM is testing DRM toward India on Jan 17-18-19 at 0815-0845 on 17530, which means we won`t be hearing it in North America (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1913, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5129.794, UT Wed Jan 17 at 0247, WBCQ is a poor S9 in ham radio show, `Amateur Radio Roundtable`. It starts at 0200 mainly as a live stream, but also on WBCQ; details at http://w5kub.com/ It may be open-ended but nominally a sesquihour on WBCQ. This WBCQ is 40-50 Hz below its usual spot; wonder if a different transmitter? At this time, no signal on 5085 WTWW-2, Ted`s competing ham show, maybe already started and finished, or AWOL (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VATICAN [non]. 7305, Jan 17 at *0131, VOA GB carrier on for a long warmup before 0145 Vatican relay in Spanish, violating Separation of Church & State. This time I`m paying closer attention. The opening ID by YL, altho speaking Spanish is ``Vatican News`` --- so it seems like NHK World, and KBS World Radio, all languages are forced to name the station in imperial English. This is their ``informativo vespertino``, but it`s only one subject, the pope`s speech begging forgiveness for the RCC having allowed Chilean priests to sexually abuse children. Fast-paced, lots of clips of Pope Francis speaking with a porteño accent, as the YL announcer narrates with a sing-song more Italian accent. She also refers to him by his Italian name, ``Papa Francesco``, geez. Cuts off the air abruptly at 0200*, and I don`t think there was any adiós, let alone a formal sign-off. Used to run until 0230, concluding with a couple minutes of ``Christus Vincit`` theme, which we now hear only once at the opening (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ZAMBIA. 5915, Jan 17 at 0221 tune-in, JBA carrier already on from presumed ZNBC1 as reactivated a few days ago. Amid ACI from 5910 Romania and 5920 WHRI, this gets no better in the next semihour when it should have begun programming (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
