Glenn Hauser logs February 22-23, 2015

** MEXICO. 700, Feb 23 at 1303, indigenous language, then Spanish mentioning Comisión Nacional para el Desarrollo de los Pueblos Indígenas (CDI), its sponsoring agency; at 1304 call-letter IDs at least twice as XEETCH. Poor signal perhaps about to fade out, but no significant QRM, loops WSW. This is in Etchojoa, Sonora, or Navojoa, 5 kW daytimer per Cantú, La Voz de los Tres Rios, and per IRCA serving three linguistic groups. Website with much more about it in Spanish:http://ecos.cdi.gob.mx/xeetch.html
including
``700 AM / 5000 watts
Dirección: Carretera Navojoa - Huatabampo, Km. 27, C.P. 85280, Etchojoa, Sonora
Horario de transmisión: Diurno de 6:00 a 18:00 horas [UT -7]
Cobertura: Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua
Lenguas en que transmite: Mayo, yaqui, guarijío y español``

It would be interesting to see what the same text would look like in those languages, but I see no link to them. Does provide audio streaming, and gallery of station staff (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 870, Feb 23 at 1306, a bit of the Mexican NA is overtaken by XETAR IDs, mentioning Comisión Nacional para el Desarrollo de Pueblos Indígenas, as I had just heard on sibling station 700 XEETCH. 1307 full ID in Spanish by W & M alternating, as La Voz de la Sierra Tarahumara, poor signal and soon fading.

CDI page linking to all its emisoras:
http://ecos.cdi.gob.mx/index.html
There are 20 around the country, but only heard XETAR and XEETCH here.

And XETAR page, same format as for XEETCH:

``870 AM / 10000 watts

Guachochi, Chihuahua. C.P. 33180
Horario de transmisión: Diurno de 6:00 a 18:00 horas [UT -7 until DST]

** OKLAHOMA. 90.1, Sunday Feb 22 at 1757 and still 1827 UT chex, KUCO Edmond, our classical station, is off the air. Maybe something to do with snowstorm; fortunately back on later in afternoon for favorite shows at 21+ UT `Wind & Rhythm`, 22+ UT `Mad About Music` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SUDAN [and non]. 15550, Feb 23 at 1532, tone jammer is JBA under R. Dabanga via VATICAN, and WJHR-USB via Milton FL making an unholy mess all by themselves; so time for a Dabanga jump? The Sudanese jammers don`t bother with R. Tamazuj which precedes it; why? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [non]. 17700, Feb 23 at 1537, very poor talk in unID language. Aoki shows it`s VOA via BOTSWANA, 1500-1530 daily in Hausa, and since January 12, adding 1530-1600 M-F (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1761 monitoring: confirmed Sunday Feb 22 at 2300 on WRMI 11580, sufficient; also confirmed UT Monday Feb 23 at 0401 on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v. Next:
Mon 2201 on Global 24 via WRMI 9395
Tue 1200 on WRMI 9955
Wed 0401 on Global 24 via WRMI 9395
Wed 0730 & 1530 on Hamburger Lokalradio 7265-CUSB
Wed 1415 on WRMI 9955
Wed 2200 on WBCQ 7490v
Wed 2201 on Global 24 via WRMI 9395
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, Feb 23 at 0647, WTWW-2 is back on, rock music and Ted reverbing from the bottle-of-the-barrel, saying he can`t remember something about the music (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1060, Feb 23 at 0658 UT, bigsig, very good dominating from NW/SE with CRS = Catholic Relief Service rice-bowl ad, 0659 UT ``pro-life update``, dead air just before 0700 UT during a space reserved for local ID which was NOT transmitted, then into EWTN Radio, `Women of Grace, Live` except it isn`t, so please don`t call.

This is obviously KRCN Longmont CO, which as we reported, recently flipped from Bloomberg BIZ to Catholic EWTN, and was widely reported earlier this evening across the country as surely on non-direxional day power 50 kW instead of 111 watts night. Only by nulling it can I bring up the off-frequency LAHs from KIJN, another cheater, and the new XERDO (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1290, Feb 23 at 0706 UT, ``on the mighty 12-90, Koil``. Not often heard here; 5 kW day and night, but night pattern has minor lobe to SSW, major lobe to NNE, while day pattern is ND (the day contour circle in the NRC Pattern Book should be dotted). IIRC, KOIL, Omaha NE was once a major rocker, but now listed as news/talk.

KOIL was on 1180 from 8/24/1993 to 4/22/2003 and again from 01/01/2009 to 06/04/2012 when 1180 became KZOT, per FCC call sign history (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1560, Feb 23 at 0702 UT, I`m checking 1560 for DX, tho the absence of NYC makes absolutely no difference here in deep North America, since even when on, the WQEW/ex-WQXR blasted most of its 50 kW signal over New England, the Maritimes and Olde England, never heard here. The hiatus is until Family Radio remakes it into a total nonentity, WFME, after having given up their old FM station in market.

But I do get something odd on 1560, ESPN Radio, `Sports Center All-Night`, looping ENE/WSW, so it can`t be Houston, and besides, that`s not ESPN, is it? NRC AM Log 2014-2015 shows several sports stations on upstart networks, but the only ESPN was WSLA, 500-watt daytimer in Slidell LA. No fit.

So I Google on ESPN 1560 and soon find a nearby candidate, WMBH in Joplin MO! Yes, a legacy W-call in the West, belonging to a rather insignificant station, and originally on 1450 until a local station/format swap. It`s only 192 miles/310 km away, city-to-city.

NRC AM Log 2014-2015 had WMBH as urban contemporary format, ``The Beat``, 250/9 watts. Altho the signal soon fades into QRM, I strongly suspect more than 9 watts. If it had stayed on 1450, it could be running 1000 watts at night, but with slightly more QRM.

Confirming WMBH is now ESPN, see these:

and click on the map dot over Joplin if you can find it
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VATICAN [non]. 15470, Feb 23 at 1531, YL with S Asian accent in English quoting and commenting on Psalms, fair signal. Aoki shows it`s VR via IBB Tinang, PHILIPPINES, ergo violating Separation of Church and State (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 774, Feb 23 at 1259-1302, JBA carrier from the NW, surely 500 kW NHK2, JOUB, Akita, a prime pilot for trans-Pacific propagation. No full bandscan, but nothing on 828, 747, 702 or 1566 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED [and non]. 9395, Monday Feb 23 at 1508 during Global 24`s `Sounds from the Global Village`, good world music show, interruption for 2-way calls twice in American accent, mentioning Coast Guard! Nothing more of that past 1530. If SSB, it must have been zero-beat to the WRMI carrier, as it sounded just right and no het. I wonder if 9395 is on any roster as a USCG frequency. How about it, NTIA? Of did what I heard somehow get mixed into the G24/WRMI transmission itself (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
