Glenn Hauser logs October 23, 2013

** CHAD. 6165, Oct 23 at 0055 before Cuba is on, no sign of RNT tonight. Not checked for a few nights, so wonder if still sporadic or finished the the all-night broadcasts? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake [non] CNR1 jamming, Oct 23 after 1300:
7310, good at 1301 but with echo and CCI from LAH, vs SOH
7365, good at 1301 with echo jamming too, vs VOA
7385, good at 1301 with echo jamming, vs RTI
7445, good at 1301 with echo, CCI, and SAH, vs RTI
No other chex today (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5025, Oct 23 at 0539, R. Rebelde with song, considerably undermodulated compared to 5040 RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH [non]. 5985, Oct 23 at 1329 OC with het, 1330 piano theme and Shiokaze signing on, very poor. The het from Myanmar on the hi side is not 5985.3 as I misstated previously but close to 5985.8; Ron Howard measured it recetnly as 5985.77v (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 660, Oct 23 at 1214 UT, Nuevo León state PSA, then ID as ABC Radio, Monterrey, with FM and AM frequencies, phone numbers, but did not hear any callsigns; then news headlines. Cantú shows:
660 XEFZ ABC Radio Monterrey, N.L. 10,000 1,000
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 850, Oct 23 at 1229 UT, with KOA nulled, Brazuguese is startling, but it`s a clip during news, soon followed by Pres. Obama in English, and someone in English with a French accent, none of it directly translated, probably about spying; then to narration in Spanish during Milenio Noticias, 7:30 TC, so from DF TV feed? Then ID as Milenio Radio listing FM frequencies in several cities: including 103.7 Monterrey, 99.5 ---, 95.3 Tijuana, 99.3 Saltillo, 103.7 Chihuahua; followed by further promos for the last one, as we already knew this would be XEM Chihuahua city, where it`s only 6:30 am. Next week will be confusing, as most of Mexico goes off DST a week before we, and the border cities do (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1030, Oct 23 at 1235 UT, ID for 98.9, time as 6:35, so the match on UT -6 timezone and FM frequency in Cantú is:
1030 XEMPM Exa + FM 98.9 Los Mochis, Sin. 10,000 1,000
altho they also mentioned California; no BCS on 1030, but they should have listeners across the Sea of Cortez (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGET)

** OKLAHOMA [non]. 1230, Oct 23 at 0511 UT, I finally have the computer on past local midnite, enjoying `Map Is Not Territory` on KSFR webcast, so also check the WBBZ Ponca City webcast --- it`s music, not Coast to Coast AM, so scratch that as possible source of my previous unID on 1230 --- must have been some graveyarder much further (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Oct 22 circa 0100: no check for Chaski, but Oct 23 at 0052, no signal detectable, in heavy music splash from 5990 China via Cuba. I can just about always detect at least a JBA carrier, so suspect it is off tonight. Another quick check at 0058, brief JBA carrier, maybe this or not, but gone again. Instead I have something more interesting on 4780: see UNIDENTIFIED (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 5875, Oct 23 at 1259, good signal from BBCWS ending `From Our Own Correspondent`, one of their best shows. I assume it is still split and scattered in 10-minute segments to fill out semihours of other shortened feature shows. 5875 is the Sunday & Wednesday frequency of the THAILAND relay at 12-14 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5779.5-USB, Oct 23 at 0056, MARS contacts between NNN0TD and NNN0GBI who is state director for New Mexico; and they discuss their other ``billet(?) calls``, whatever that means, and I am not sure which one applies to which, AFE6TM and NNN0TSO; also mention Navy/Marine Corps MARS. Now starts the post-research.
http://navymars.org/south/reg6/nmwtx/nmwtx.htm
shows NNN0GBI apparently as general call for the NM/West Texas MARS. NNN0TSO is the individual Richard Norton, State Director (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1692: ready for first airing UT Thursday Oct 24 at 0330 on WRMI 9955; Thursday 2101 on WTWW-1 9479; UT Friday 0327v on WWRB 5050; UT Sat 0200v on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v-CUSB; Saturday 0630 & 1430 on HLR 7265-CUBS; Saturday 1500 on WRMI 9955; Saturday 2329v on WTWW-2 9930; UT Sunday 0401 on WTWW-1 5830 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5830, Oct 23 at 0540, WTWW-1 is off, but WTWW-2 is on 5085; at 1258, 5830 is also/still off; at 1305, WTWW-1 is off 9479 as is -2  off 9930. But at 1324, WTWW-3 is on 12105 in Russian, and now 9930 is on with BS (Glenn Hauser, oK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 880, Oct 23 at 1245 UT, Navajo syllables heard with KRVN nulled, another pre-sunrise appearance by KHAC Window Rock AZ (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 930, Oct 23 at 1247 UT, in tight WKY OKC null, country music, English announcement, TC as 5:47, 1250 segué. Only fit in the UT-7 zone per NRC AM Log is: KAFF Flagstaff AZ, C&W, 5000/31 watts, PSRA 500, always non-direxional. But PSRA start-time of 6 am local MST would not come until 1300 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. TP carrier search Oct 23 at 1237-1242: 693, 774, 828, 873, 972, 1053 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 740, Oct 23 at 1226 UT I finally manage to hear some Spanish briefly under KRMG Tulsa before it goes to day power/tower. May have mentioned ``Radio Santa Fe`` or similar syllables. Don`t find any Mexican or US station with such a name; NRC AM Log does show KIDR Phoenix AZ as Spanish religion, but I can`t find a website for it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4780, Oct 23 at 0053, starting my almost-nightly 60m bandscan with DX-398 on the porch, next up from 4765 Cuba is ---- Qur`an! on 4780, poor signal. Never anything like this heard before at this hour. Keeps going without break thru 0100 hourtop. This version is quite melodic with some reverb added, like I have heard on certain other stations, but which? Both on the DX-398 and separate G8 I quickly start searching for a // on the 6, 7, 9, 11, 13 and even 15 MHz bands, but none found. Definitely *not* // 9760 Oman, 12080 Iran, 9965 Cairo.

The only Islamic-world station ordinarily on 4780 is of course Djibouti, normally not on the air until 0300 or so and IIRC has also been missing lately. Not being Ramadan, it`s much too early for it to be on the air unless something special is ongoing. Checked Djibouti holiday references and none now, altho there was one a week ago.

4780 is weakening by 0113, 0117, but still audible at 0123. The signal sometimes fades below a threshold, which is suspiciously like a receiver image, but to produce one, there would have to be a very strong signal on a higher frequency (like 5680, = 2 x 450 IF) which there certainly is not. By the time I get inside to check it on the FRG-7, it`s inaudible.

It could be a one-off, some transmitter totally mistuned, punching in a wrong number, unlikely to show up again. We`ll certainly keep checking. I`d say Djibouti off-schedule is the most likely source. Did anyone else hear it and with anything identifiable?

Another possibility is a difference mixing product radiating between two higher SW frequencies at the same site, and neither one of them would necessarily be audible, e.g. somethings on the 11 and 7 MHz bands, 4780 kHz apart.

Or, a leapfrog mixing product from the 7 MHz band over same-site transmitter on the 6 MHz band, solely as an example: 7220 leaping over 6000 to land on 4780, another 1220 kHz lower.

Yet another possibility would be a subharmonic of 9560, one half that frequency, from a mistuned or unfiltered transmitter generating 9560 from a lower frequency --- but nothing Arabic heard or scheduled there, just some Chinese, presumably Kashgar.

No, 4780 does not work out either to be a possible harmonic of any exact 9- or 10-kHz MW channel (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1692, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
