Glenn Hauser logs October 21-22, 2013

** CANADA. 6160, Oct 22 at 1236, CBC wake-up show with PDT timechex, temps as 4 degrees in Chilliwack, 8 in Vancouver. Nice to hear CKZU making it again; fair signal, but pales compared to 6150 Ustralia (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [and non]. Firedrake [non] CNR1 jamming Oct 22, before 1330:
17510, fair with flutter at 1320 mixing with algo, i.e. BBC Uzbek semihour via OMAN, as the ChiCom continue to interfere in the internal affairs of a neighbor
15575, poor at 1320
15545, poor at 1320
12980, poor at 1324; none in the 14s, 13s except maybe 13830

Before 1400 Oct 22:
16110, open carrier only at 1350, fair-good with flutter until cutoff at 1400:25*. I seriously suspect this is such a jammer on standby
15570, poor at 1352, het on lo side, i.e. V. of Tibet, Tajikistan
15550, very poor at 1352, het on hi side, ditto; both shifted 5 kHz from a semihour earlier as above (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 9490, Oct 22 at 0247, wall-of-noise jamming still running altho R. República via FRANCE is supposed to be on only at 00-02 UT; HFCC: ``9490 0000 0200 11 ISS 250 275 0 216 1234567 310313 261013 D 8500 Spa F RMI TDF 10272``. RR is often inaudible under the jamming and am not sure if it is really on now, extended, but the DentroCuban Jamming Command thinx it is. Usually, like a cat pissing on the door, they leave lighter pulse jamming markers on 9490 all night.

9810, Oct 22 at 0249, weak RHC Spanish is bothered by pulse jamming from 9805 against nothing, since R. Martí is on 9805 only at 10-13 UT. Cuba vs Cuba! Get your act together, Arnie (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA [and non]. 3325, Oct 22 at 1228, very poor signal with music, presumably RRI Palangkaraya, not PNG. I got a late start today with this the first morning log.

4750 at 1232 Oct 22, two very poor signals hetting, one of them maybe RRI Makassar, which was still on at 1200 today per Ishida, altho he and Ron Howard found it missing yesterday (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN [and non]. 11660, Oct 22 at 0250, Qur`an with sexey reverb added, good with flutter. HFCC shows IRIB, 500 kW, 289 degrees from Zahedan now shifted to 0220-0520. Meanwhile, 12080 Arabic from same is quite weak but at least on-frequency tonight. (I misspell the word before reverb in order to foil spam filters?)

11700, Oct 22 at 0250, VIRI IS, good with flutter; 0254 retune, in Qur`an, then announcement in unknown language. HFCC shows 0250-0320, 500 kW, 320 degrees from Sirjan in the ``AXM`` language --- huh? Probably means Armenian, which used to start at 0300. Yes, note in far-right HFCC column easily overlooked says Armenia. Not synch or // with 11925 opening another service, q.v.

11925, Oct 22 at 0253, VIRI IS, Russian sign-on, NA, Qur`an; has heavier flutter than 11700 in Armenian, and also a het on 11925, presumably always-off-frequency R. Bandeirantes, Brasil. 11925 is 500 kW, 58 degrees from Kamalabad (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH. 2850, Oct 22 at 1229, very poor carrier from presumed Pyongyang KCBS. Frequently check this, still awaiting a good showing this season (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA SOUTH [and non]. 5150, Oct 22 at 1226, YL talk in Korean, fair and no jamming; // 6360, Oct 22 at 1236 atop Juche jamming noise, i.e. MND Radio, in Aoki as 100 kW, ND from ChunCheon on both during this hour and at 0400. On 6360 also RTTY QRM (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA [non]. 7505, Oct 22 at 1246 open carrier, fair signal; ¿qué será? A semiminute before 1300, finally starts modulating with ``Chariots of Fire`` theme and opening Hindi, so it`s VR as scheduled until 1600, 100 kW, 137 degrees from Dushanbe, TAJIKISTAN.

While it`s a nice piece of music, every time I hear it, I ask myself, what has that got to do with Russia? I envision British marathoners. But then, the Great Gate of Kiev had nothing to do with Russia either, strictly speaking. Why not a more appropriate theme, like, say, Moscow Nights?

BTW, WRNO is entitled to blow this away if they ever expand beyond three hours a day in the evenings on 7506.4+, with ``7505`` registered all the way from 22 to 16 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SUDAN [and non]. 7205, Oct 22 at 0244, good signal but very undermodulated Arabic, no doubt Omdurman; then K4DSA, Alvin C. York in Clinton TN per ARRL, starts calling CQ on LSB; he`s slightly off-tuned from the AM carrier, but close enough to be readable; apparently oblivious to Sudan`s presence (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** THAILAND. 9390, Oct 22 at 1247, W&M alternating with news about Malaysia, Maldives, Kurdistan, etc., fair with flutter, i.e. HSK9 semihour for SE Asia/Australia. I see in HFCC B-13 that the 1230 & 1400 English from NBT = R. Thailand will continue on 9390. The rest:
1900-2000  9965 (oh oh, `KHBN` also registered but maybe wooden)
2030-2045  9535
0000-0100 13745 (with usual slew-switch at 0030 from E to W NAm)
0200-0230 13745
0530-0600 12015 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7290.0, Oct 22 at 0245, huge AM signal from ham instead of broadcaster, W0VMC who is laughing at his own humor. ARRL shows: Smith, Robert M, W0VMC, New Richmond, WI 54017. Then over to contact K9VAI(?) also AM, but much weaker. See also SUDAN [and non] (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 11825, Oct 24 at 0251, sum mixture of WWCR 5890 BS plus 5935 DGS/PMS, on the DX-398. Fundamentals are extremely strong, probably making receiver overload breakthru, but haven`t noticed this combination before. Possibly could also be transmitting a few watts here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 720, Oct 21 at 2005 UT, from squirrel haven north of Enid in a lo-noise area, very weak signal on caradio, but at 2006 I do make out ``Your Money on WGN``; also SAH of about 5 Hz, San Antonio? Long before sunset, but is it residual skywave or groundwave at almost 700 miles from Chicago? Again no sign of WSCR on 670, just KLTT Denver (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. TA carriers noted Oct 22 at 0552, now still before sunrise in W Europe: 909 and 774 kHz, looping NE/SW. The bigsig on 909 easily heard further east is BBC Radio 5 Live, synchros adding up to 400+ kW; on 774 the bigsigs are too far east in Egypt and Iran (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
