Glenn Hauser logs October 16-18, 2013

** ANTARCTICA [and non]. 15476, Oct 17 at 1948, JBA carrier almost at imagination level from presumed LRA36, as who else would be on 15476? Closest thing to compare it to is RAE, LRA## on 15345, not close enough in General Pacheco/Buenos Aires, and it`s a BA carrier. (I assume this frequency/transmitter has a callsign, but not in WRTH; 6060 is LRA31 as R. Nacional) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake [non], CNR 1 jamming, Oct 18 before 1400:
12370, very good at 1249, with flutter
This one really outstix, since there were no others in a scan down from 18 to 12 MHz, nor in the 10s or 8, except:
13830, poor at 1348; and the usual 11, 9 and 7 MHz inbanders (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EAST TURKISTAN [and non]. 17630, Oct 18 at 1342, big hole where CRI English is normally heard via Urumqi, while the two French frequencies, 17560 and 17650 via Kashgar are in well, playing rock song in English, why not? Something wrong at Urumqi? No Mali either. And no ACI to 17625 BSKSA, // 17615 both weak (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EQUATORIAL GUINEA [and non]. 15190, Oct 17 at 1945, R. Africa starting `The Truth, Light & Life Broadcast` (or was it Life & Light?) with OK modulation on this one vs JBM on some others recently, making me wonder if unit is about to crash again. Maybe not. Fair signal with flutter. Meanwhile, DRM from VON is blasting in circa 15120 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA [and non]. 11985 // 11740, Oct 18 at 0048, AIR in S Asian song, Sinhala service really running on both scheduled frequencies; both poor but this time more flutter on 11740 GOA than on 11985 Khampur.

Also there is CCCCCCI on 11740 I haven`t noticed before, making a fast SAH, per Aoki from CNR1, 100 kW, 286 degrees from Lingshi 725 site at 2055-0100. I wonder how much this messes up AIR in Sri Lanka during the first half of their broadcast? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) OK, CCCCCCI = Chinese Communist, Chinese language, co-channel interference, not necessarily in that order; 601 for short

** IRAN. 12080.0, Oct 18 at 0105, very poor signal but enough to tell that the VIRI 13-hour Arabic service via Zahedan site is on-frequency tonight instead of a sesqui-kHz higher. Oct 13 & 15 it was also correct, but on Oct 11 & 14 it was off; not checked on 16 or 17 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA SOUTH [and non]. Checking the clandestines vs N Korean noise jammers at 1135-1140 Oct 18:
6600, pop song is atop the jamming, V. of the People
6518, jamming is heavier here vs V. of the People
6480, Korean talk over jamming, MND Radio
6400, Korean, no jamming of course* since it`s Pyongyang BS itself
6348, Korean with echo, music, over jamming, Echo of Hope
6270, Korean talk, no jamming, MND Radio
*I shouldn`t say ``of course`` since the Juche are capable of jamming themselves on VOK mixtures. IDs as per Aoki (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 720, Oct 18 at 0457 UT, full ID for XHDE FM 105.7 & XEDE AM, 0458 NA, mixing WGN with SAH of 192/minute = 3.2 Hz. No sign of the real KSAH at the moment. Cantú:
720 XEDE La Kaliente + FM 105.7 Saltillo, Coah. 8,000 250
Kudos to XEDE for holding its own with 250 watts vs 50,000 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 720, Oct 18 at 1231 UT, Fox-logo fanfare, then YL talking about someone who took off their clothes; phone keeps ringing in background; WGN almost nulled. Seems further west than Saltillo, ergo XEJCC, Extremo 720, Ciudad Juárez (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 770, Oct 18 at 1200 UT, Fórmula promo with an 866- phone number to hear it ``en la Unión Americana`` from 7 to 8 am Mexican central time. I.e. a US toll-free number. Cantú:
770 XEACH Radio Fórmula Primer Cadena Monterrey, N.L. 25,000 1,000
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 9775 & 3235, Oct 18 at 0059 and 0104, no signals from Radio YHWH. I was going to quit noting these non-logs, but later that evening, Bob LaRose, W6ACU in S California had them again on 3235, at 0255-0304+, but by the time I saw his tip to the DXLD yg at 0350, nothing was there (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1120, Oct 17 at 1944 UT check, KEOR Catoosa/Sperry/Tulsa has managed to modulate, with praise music, following at least a pentaminute of deadair 5.4 hours earlier. Oh oh, back to deadair again, Oct 18 at 1212 making usual SAH with KMOX (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1640, Oct 18 at 1221 UT, market reports including hogs and grain, with ``KZLS True Oldies Channel`` ID superimposed, lest the music fans tune away too quickly during this break from format; came from the Radio Oklahoma Ag Net. So ex-KOAG is still partly-ag, part-of-the-time --- and they also break away for stupid ballgames. Reactivated FCC AM Query still thinx this is in Enid, despite IDs deleting Enid for Hennessey (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1650, Oct 18 at 1147 UT, weather for northern OK (rain coming, altho this station is in far eastern OK), despite this being from ``News on 6, Radio Oklahoma Network``, i.e. meteorologist at KOTV-45 Tulsa; then Sallisaw ads which is the real town of KYHN studios and transmitter, despite CoL as Ft Smith AR. They compromise with references to ``Arklahoma`` which certainly has more of a ring to it than ``Oklansas (Oklasaw?)``. At the moment atop KCNZ in Iowa, tho should still be on 1 kW nite power instead of daytime-dektupling it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU [and non]. 5980, Oct 16 until 0100:12.5*, R. Chaski cutoff (overlooked in that day`s report as I was so focused on Chile 12365). Not checked Oct 17.

5980, Oct 18 at 0057, JBA carrier from R. Chaski (meanwhile 5990 CRI/Cuba is already in open carrier and soon off). Chaski cutoff comes at 0100:23*, which is 10.5 seconds later than a biday ago (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOMALILAND [and non]. 7120, Oct 18 at 1354, very poor signal with some music, no doubt R. Hargeisa, with CW QRhaM. Finding 15505 Bangladesh JBA, instead of straining for its off-time signal, I decide today to track Hargeisa to its expected cutoff circa 1400, which indeed happens at 1401:35.5*. It takes a 1-hour break before resuming circa 1500 until circa 1900. Those further west might hear it come back on then, by long path. Today`s Hargeysa sunset was 1446 UT per
http://www.gaisma.com/en/location/hargeysa.html
Ron Howard and Dan Sheedy in CA even heard Rwanda 6055 LP today after 1500 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SUDAN [and non]. 15400, Oct 18 at 0450, tone jammer is way atop barely audible R. Dabanga, via MADAGASCAR (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SWEDEN [non]. 11875, Oct 17 at 1952, fair signal in tonal African language mentioning Nigeria, Hausa? No, Aoki shows at 1900-2000 its IBRA Radio`s ``Radio Ibrahim`` service, this quarter hour in Malinke on Wednesdays & Thursdays, otherwise in Jula, 300 kW, 182 degrees from Woofferton UK. I assume the ``Ibrahim`` name is designed to trick Moslems into listening to something designed to convert them from one Abrahamist sect into another (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TAIWAN [non]. 9265, Oct 18 at 0200, PCJ Radio test via WINB succeeds this time after a no-show six nights ago. Keith Perron himself is already voicing the news, circa 0208 into Andy Sennitt`s show, and 0227 Bob Zanotti`s. Reception would have been sufficient, if not very good, on WINB`s seemingly underpowered transmitter, but since the computer was on, I confess to listening mostly to the stream. If there`s nothing better available, that other Taiwan station should do this too (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1691 monitoring: confirmed on WTWW-1, 9479, at 2101 Thursday Oct 18. Next airing also confirmed on WWRB 5050 at 0350 check, having been monitored first on webcast starting at 0328. Next: UT Saturday 0200v on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v-CUSB; Sat 0630 & 1430 on HLR 7265-CUSB; Sat 1500 on WRMI 9955; Sat 2329v on WTWW-2 9930; UT Sun 0401v on WTWW-1 5830 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5975, Oct 18 at 0057, *image* of 6875 WWCR on the DX-398 with 450 kHz IF; quite weak and had never noticed it before; just in time, as in a sesquiweek it will vanish along with 6875 from the schedule, to be replaced by image on 5215. Often-noted carrier on 5035 aside huge 5040 RHC may well be another such, 900 kHz below 5935 WWCR, rather than Aparecida (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9479, Oct 18 at 1352, open carrier/dead air from WTWW-1, past 1400 with no ID inserted either; I failed to keep a receiver on 9479 to detect when it started, but modulating at 1725 check (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 570, Oct 18 at 1225 UT, far-right comments, then ``The Home of News New Mexico, KSNM 570``. Talkhost asserts since Clinton was caught lying, Obama must be too. About something. Thus making a very bad first impression as obviously extremely biased. There was info recently that KSNM was changing ownership; is this before or after? NRC AM Log shows 5000/155 watts with 250-watt PSRA but sounds more like 5 kW to me.

Yes, NNM originates at KSNM. About it with affiliate list:

(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 620, Oct 18 at 1158 UT, ``If you want football in Arizona`` [hardly!], then BSA PSA, some XE QRM. So it`s KTAR Phœnix, now with ESPN. At least they kept the heritage calls. NRC Pattern Book 2013 shows night pattern with a pretty deep null toward me, but non-direxional daytime, 5 kW both (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 910, Oct 18 at 1205 UT, Fox `news` into ``91 Classic Country KCJB Minot`` ID, where it`s 35 degrees; promo pasta giveaway trivia quiz coming up. Quite dominant 5 kW signal from ND, nothing much audible with it nulled. NPR Pattern Book shows day pattern goes SW, night pattern NE. Guess which one they are really on now, long before Oct official sunrise of 1300 (November: 1345). Nothing about a PSRA in their FCC file (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1280, Oct 18 at 0515 UT, Spanish sports talk from SE/NW, no doubt WODT New Orleans LA with its major 5/5 kW lobe to the NW, now with ESPN Deportes, as the original WDSU is long-gone (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1680, Oct 18 at 1149 UT, KRJO Monroe LA with country music barely audible. Seems not only now but at other chex, KRJO is not up to full power of even 1 kW night. Much weaker than other X-banders. Reactivated FCC website AM Query shows its Oct SR/SS times are 1215/2330 UT; should monitor then whether there`s a bump. In Nov, 1230/2315 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM. 7906-USB, Oct 18 at 1306, very poor signal, briefly hear YL in Vietnamese, i.e. Ho Chi Minh City Radio, also with more nearby SSB QRM, and losing it before any English (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 12005, Oct 18 at 0104, very poor signal from VOV English to NAm, 250 kW, 282 degrees from Woofferton UK (and also at 0230). This is the usual situation now; we can hardly wait for the B-13 switch to 9640 on same parameters --- by then, REE Costa Rica and its QRDRM from +9620 to 9640+ should be kaput. Really, 7 MHz would be better for the winter. Remember that the 282 azimuth from WOF misses most of the USA, crossing central FL and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Is that the best BaBcoCk can do for us via that site?

Also remember that the next VOV English repeat at 0330 will continue to be on WHRI 6175, and altho aimed south, provides an incomparably stronger and more reliable signal, and to the rest of North America too. It could of course be even better if on a NW antenna like WHR`s gospel-huxter frequencies (so is this during the WHR promos and OCS abutting VOV transmissions; how come the Viet Cong put up with that?) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. TP carrier search, Oct 18 at 1152, JBA on 774; at 1153, JBA on 882 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7735 approx., Oct 18 at 0453-0500* good open AM carrier with flutter; smax of broadcast behavior, off promptly at hourtop. Remember when WYFR used to have a frequency way up in this range? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
