Glenn Hauser logs October 15-16, 2013

** ARGENTINA. 15345+, Oct 15 at 2148, RAE playing ``El Condor Pasa`` as Argentina is after all, marginally, an Andean nation too; fair with flutter. This hour on weekdays is scheduled in German (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 4875, Oct 16 at 0108 music from presumed Rdif. Roraima, notable only because the spurblob is nowhere around for once (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 4885, Oct 16 at 0108, silly ballgame in Portuguese, presumed R. Clube do Pará, but with frequent commercial/music breaks; 0109 heard ``gooaaaallll``. Suspect the same World Cup qualifying match I am hearing on 12365-USB via CHILE, Ecuador v. Chile in Santiago. Or maybe some other game is more important in Pará? As usual, CODAR avoided by tuning LSB only from 4885 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 11780, Oct 16 at 0619, RNA, VG signal with good music, but modulation is a bit rough, and with BFO can tell the carrier is unstable; while // 6180 is OK (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHILE. 12365-USB, Oct 16 at 0059, poor signal with broadcast in rapid Spanish of a fútbol game frequently referring to the pelota; at 0105, also mentions rodillas (so someone is on his knees); 0119 still in but very poor. I started checking for this Oct 15 at 2147, also at 2229, 2301, but nothing heard then (except CODAR).

Like exactly one year ago, an unofficial relay of Radio Cooperativa, one of the major stations in Chile, has been put on 12365-USB because Chile is competing in the qualifiers for next year`s World Cup in Brasil. Claudio Galaz in Chile tipped the condiglista, Friday Oct 11 that this might be coming up, and it was then widely heard in South America after 2100 UT, Colombia vs Chile from Barranquilla.

Lots of speculation on the condiglist about who is doing these relays. I`m editing it all together for the next DXLD:
http://www.w4uvh.net/dxld1342.txt
Claudio thinx it`s coming from a military base in northern Chile, Antofagasta or Calama, since monitors in the north are getting a stronger signal; however, I think it could be just the opposite due to skip distances, unless the northerners are really close, within groundwave range.

Horacio Nigro and Dario Monferini checked the schedules and told me one more match would be on October 15 from 2130(?), Chile vs Ecuador. Looked up later, played in Santiago, Chile beat Ecuador 2-1, but Ecuador is still in the running to qualify unless Uruguay surpasses them later. On the Oct 11 match, Chile beat Colombia 3-1.

For last year`s reports about this see under CHILE:
http://www.w4uvh.net/dxld1242.txt
Another station on 12365-USB is marine weather from VMC in Australia, which could be bothered, but no sign of it during my logs.

The Klingenfuss guidebook of 2002y showed 12365 also as a worldwide simplex ship frequency. Current EiBi also has Russian spy numbers on it, but only at 1000-1030 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also BRAZIL: 4885

** CHINA. Firedrake [non] CNR1 jammer search Oct 16 circa 1330:
12980, fair at 1324 with flutter. No others 13-18 MHz except:
15265, poor at 1330, // 12980 and with a lo het as usual, Taiwan askew
15575, very poor at 1327 with het on lo side, so V of Tibet must be on 15573 at the moment. One might have assumed 15575 was the ``North American Service`` of KBS World Radio in English, had I not been able to // it to 12980! So besides not propagating all winter, KBS confronts CCI from the ChiCom
16110, fair at 1331 with similar flutter to 12980, just an open carrier, but suspicious; checked with BFO, no, it`s not RTTY. Aoki and I have had Sound of Hope/jamming as close at 16100 and 16160
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** COSTA RICA. 11815, Oct 16 at 1322, REE poor in Spanish, but not much NHK CCI today. Marty Delfín of El País in Madrid informs us that REE will be CLOSING the Cariari relay at the end of A-13, off from October 27! One more bites the dust. REE already canceled all CR transmissions northward, except for DRM at 00-02 on 9630. Supposedly broadcasts direct from Noblejas will be expanded to compensate.

The tentative HFCC B-13 schedule as of 14 Oct still lists Cariari on six frequencies: 3350, 5965, 5970, 9675, 11815, 17850 as effective until 30 March, apparently having been contingently registered and to be removed. At least that will get rid of the wideband DRM noise surrounding 9630 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 890 // 900, Oct 16 at 0608, same song in Spanish from SE vs CCI on both, surely R. Progreso, Chambas, Ciego de Ávila, and much further San Germán, Holguín, respectively, 200 and 50 kW per WRTH. There are also CMBC`s listed on 810, 820, 850, 880, 920, 940, etc., etc., which one might also be able to log by // to 890 if not 4765 at this hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EQUATORIAL GUINEA [and non]. 15190, Oct 15 at 2148, R. Africa poor signal but just barely modulated, and het from R. Inconfidência, Brasil, always off-frequency, usually on the hi side. Wolfgang Büschel suggests that the reactivation of this (and 5005) could be thanks to Chinese engineers making the maintenance rounds thru Africa. TDP shows EqG got 2 x 50 kW from China in 1973. Little did the ChiCom know (or care?) that one of them would be devoted to American gospel huxters, even Tony Alamo (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 11985 // 11740, Oct 16 at 0059, AIR Sinhala service succeeds in occupying both frequencies with same music, probably out of synch, heavy flutter. It`s supposed to last until 0115, but at 0112 check, 11740 via GOA has vanished, 11985 still in music.

With time running out, on 5990 there is a very poor signal which is supposed to be the AIR Sindhi service, maybe a trace of musical modulation, not enough to tell whether it`s // 11985 before the latter goes to open carrier 0115 and off. Both 5990 and 11985 are listed as the Delhi (Khampur) site, whatever the (mis)programming may be, easy to cross feeds (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN. 6190, Oct 16 at 1257, rock song in Japanese by girl group; 1300, 3+1 NHK timesignal a few seconds late, and opening Chinese with `Sakura` theme; before 1300 scheduled in Korean, both 300 kW, 290 degrees from Ibaragi-Koga-Yamata site. Good signal, surely not blown away by typhoon; vs hardly anything from BBC Singapore up 5 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH [and non]. 9435, Oct 16 at 1320, VOK very good signal with jamming mix noise in background, but no Chinese crosstalk! Usual incredibly stilted exposition in English. // 11710 totally overshadowed by the other automatons at The Lord`s Ranch on 11715. Seems that 9435 is often missing or poorly audible, but not today (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 540, Oct 16 at 1200 UT, partial ID mentions 95.9 FM, Ciudad de México, and the four descending XEW chimes, then news headlines with liners as ``info-radio``(?), mentions Planeta; 1203 already into English music ``When You`re Smiling`` (Satchmo?), then DJ discussing it in Spanglish.

From Cantú this appears to be the XEWA in Monterrey, which is W Radio and presumably relaying from the DF, XEW-900 and 96.9 (not 95.9 as I thought I heard); rather than the other XEWA in SLP, despite the power disparity:
540 XEWA W Radio Monterrey, N.L.                           1,500 1,000
540 XEWA Los 40 Principales + FM 103.9 San Luis Potosi, S.L.P. 150,000 150,000
Looped roughly SSW, both in about the same direxion. By nulling this, I could also hear another SS further west, presumably usual XETX in Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 690, Oct 16 at 1210 UT, promo with 800-numbers, XEN with full ID, 100,000 watts, street address, Grupo Radio Centro, amid a show which runs from 6 am to 1 pm (CT). KGGF nulled. Cantú:
690 XEN La 69 México, DF 100,000 5,000
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO [and non]. 780-, Oct 16 at 0614 UT, some station is now off-frequency enough to the lo side to make a lo audible het with WBBM, approx. opposite direxion, as it`s not Pueblo music which makes only a slow SAH with WBBM. At 1216 UT with KSPI OK nulled, I am again hearing that het with a station in Spanish, but stepping up and down to nearby frequencies with BFO, KSPI is also off to the lo side (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO [and non]. 970, Oct 16 at 0609 UT, really lovely heartfelt version of ``Malagueña Salerosa``, maybe Linda Ronstadt? But no back-announce, just 0612 ID as ``La Jota Mexicana, 970-AM``, i.e. XEJ, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Salerosa refers to salt, salty? Witty? What does it really connote in this title? Google translate can`t handle saleroso/a at all.

950 and 970 stations have no problem getting past my local 960 KGWA, while my other 1 kW local, 1390 KCRC, blox its adjacent channels and desensitizes even further ones (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1030, Oct 16 at 1243 UT, two stations in Spanish, one of which IDs as 103.3 y 970, Radio Fórmula, i.e. relaying the network flagship in the DF; Cantú does not cross-reference 103.3 on the 970 frequency listing, but separately does have 103.3 as XERFR too. Per 1030 listing this one is:
1030 XEYC Radio Fórmula Cd. Juárez, Chih. 5,000 500
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 9775 and 3235, Oct 16 at 0102 and later, no shows again from Station YHWH. The one time I heard it 8 nights ago on 9775, it did sound like Ron Howard`s recordings on 3234.95:
https://app.box.com/s/n5quk1qzbjv1ttpqb7n7
https://app.box.com/s/9rnb0moivju3pbixj9eo
That low frequency makes me suspect a western USA location
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6960-AM, Oct 16 at 0102, very poor signal with music, SSB QRM. No other pirates found this time. Several logs on HF Underground say this was a relay of The Crystal Ship (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA. 5930 & 5940, Oct 16 at 1254, song in English on R. Rossii; another instance of drastic difference in propagation from Pet/Kam and Magadan respectively: good on 5930, JBA on 5940 over more northerly path. Maybe there is also a direxional factor? Not per Aoki, showing both as 100 kW, 30 degrees, favorably USward (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TAJIKISTAN. 7505, Oct 16 at 1311, S Asian talk, poor in splash from Joyce Riley on 7490 WWCR, still too close for comfort. Aoki shows V of Russia in Hindi, 100 kW, 137 degrees from Dushanbe-Yangiyul (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15110, Oct 15 at 2149 check, VOA Greenville in Bambara is OK today, not dropping off the air every two seconds like yesterday (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5110-CUSB, Oct 16 at 0106 rock music from WBCQ; 0109 Fred Flintstone talking about the tunes of Tommy Hagar. So yet another regular appearance during this hour on UT Wednesdays. Now this and `Marion`s Attic` on UT Tuesdays have finally been added to the 5110 program guide:
http://schedule.wbcq.com/main.php?fn=sked&freq=5110
Another one to watch out for is `Church of the Subgenius Hour of Slack`, Sundays at 23-24 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9930, Oct 16 at 1318, WTWW-2 is missing, nor on 5085, while WTWW-1 is running on 9479 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1010, Oct 16 at 1229 UT, promos for KXEN, 1230 preacher. Maybe not yet back up to 50 kW day power, but sure sounds like more than STA of 350 watts; St Louis MO, but site in IL (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1020, Oct 16 at 1231 UT, Spanish plugging dinosaur exhibit in Lincoln, but pronouncing dino names in English, reference to
http://discoverthedinosaurs.com where we see it`s only a travelling exhibit, ``October 18-19-20, 2013, Lincoln, NE, Lancaster Event Center``. Makes one Hz SAH with nearby KOKP Perry OK almost nulled. 1232 ``La Estación de la Raza``, i.e. KMMQ Plattsmouth (Omaha) NE, 50/1.4 kW so maybe already on day power (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM. 7906-USB, Oct 16 at 1315 a bit of JBA music, talk and apparently off, no doubt Ho Chi Minh City Radio with marine weather partly in English. Must try to tune in at start 1305, and also check // 8294. Neither is in Aoki, but in EiBi: also sharing time on 7906 are Ben Thuy, Ca Mau, Can Tho, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Hon Gai, Hue, Kien Giang, Mong Cai, Nha Trang, Pham Rang, Phan Tiet, Phu Yen, Qui Phong, and Vung Tau; and on 8294 (USB) only Da Nang, Hai Phong, Qui Phong. HCM City is the only one with some English, also starting at 0105 and 0910 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. TA carrier search Oct 16 at 0056-0059: JBA detectable only on 774, 783 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
