Glenn Hauser logs July 16-17, 2010

** BRAZIL [and non]. 6185, July 17 at 0040 with music in Spanish from XEPPM, no CCI so I conclude Brasília is still absent from this frequency, unlike 11780, VG with Brazilian music at this time (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. Just before ReVision Quest, I happened to be listening to CBC News via Regina webcast, July 17 at 1604, when they announced that the wrong ``The House`` was aired on the network today, and people should hear the right episode from web archive! I`ll bet the producers are steamed (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake July 17:
7280, fair at 1121, // 8400 but not 9040. Unlike the others, 7280`s victim is also audible, a 300 kW Sound of Hope via Taiwan at 11-13. Otherwise, it`s unusual to hear any FD below 8400
 8400, good at 1118, not // 9040; also after 1205 and at 1237
9040, good at 1118. This one is not // the others. Also after 1205 but gone at 1237
 9380, fair at 1157, // 8400 and 7280, not 9040. Also after 1205 but gone at 1237
10500, good at 1159; also after 1205 but gone at 1237
No others found up to 18 MHz.

CNR1 jamming, besides usual spots 9605, 11785, 11805, 12040, etc., also vs RTI on 11710 [see KOREA NORTH] making SAH of some 10 Hz, and // 15795 an echo apart, July 17 at 1241 vs All India Radio`s Chinese service, which the ChiCom must also block from reaching the People (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 7480-7530, OTH radar pulses, presumed from here, July 17 at 1122. A typhoon just hit Hainan, ``causing heavy damage``, says CBC News, but apparently not windy enough to blow down some antennas from this or the jammers (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [non]. 13650, CRI Portuguese via CUBA, Fri July 16 at 2325 was interviewing a Brazilian SWL, mentioning listening to RDPI, R. Praga and others in Spanish if not Portuguese. Never caught his name, 2330 abruptly into ``Aula de chinês, dia a dia`` language lessons. Usually crummy modulation from relay, pales by comparison to much louder and clearer RNV relay on 13680 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** COSTA RICA [and non]. 5954+, very weak carrier from ELCOR is still there, July 17 at 0045, but far too much ACI from 5950 Harold Camping mumbling and non-mumbling 5960 CRI Chinese via Sackville, to make out any audio on 5954. At 0100 with 5960 off, jamming noise now blots 5955, could not detect it earlier, so the DentroCubans apparently think R. República is still being carried on 5954 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. RHC Spanish, July 17 at 0043 check: 5970, 6000, 6060, 6110, 6120. 5040 which should have been in French, was off the air as it has been a lot lately, tho 5025 Rebelde was audible as usual.

Checking for English, at 0101, 6000 and better 5970, the rest in Spanish. One YL introduced Ed Newman and Ann(e) Sullivan as ``news anchors`` starting at 0102.

The RHC schedule at
http://www.radiohc.cu/espanol/c_frecuencia/frecuencias.htm
still does not show anything on 5970 before 0100, just: 01-05 English and 07-11 Spanish, tho it`s consistently in English at 05-07 too. Perhaps that is what should go in the blank space for English to San Francisco at 05-07! This sked has been amended, however, to show 6150 with English instead of Spanish at 05-07, as we have been logging it the past week.

5990, at 0050 and several earlier chex during the hour July 17, nothing but open carrier. Supposed to be CRI relay in Spanish.

9490, at 1158 July 17, whining jamming, presumably leftover against R. República, Sackville, at 23-02 only. Gone after 1200.

11775, PMS Anguilla with pulse jamming, July 17 at 1201, leftover from R. Martí at 23-03 only.

Unlike the morning before, this time 13780 was the missing frequency at 1340, while 13680 was on. By 1432 both were on for ``Cancionero Iberoamericano`` music, but 13680 had a big hum and lower modulation. Leapfrog also on 13880, not audible on 13580 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also CHINA [non], COSTA RICA [and non], VENEZUELA [non]

** JAPAN [and non]. 6120, NHKWNRJ, via Sackville, CANADA, July 17 at 1211 after news starting what is now the Saturday program, ``Radio Japan Focus Weekend Cruise``, but fading into high noise level, both atmospheric and local. // 9695 direct axually better tho aimed 235 degrees into Asia, discussing lyrix of song in translation, such as ``take a photo of your naked body`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH. 19m band not open for much, July 17 at 1241, but VOK music // 11710 on 15180 was strongest signal on band (SSOB), only rivals being WYFR 15130, RDPI 15560. 15180 in clear but 11710 with CCI in Chinese, CNR1 jamming against Taiwan, Commies vs Commies! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Following our forward to the local newspaper of the July 12 FCC notice about fining KEIF, the story finally made the top of the front page on July 17:
http://enidnews.com/localnews/x2114030259/KEIF-hit-with-FCC-fines
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PHILIPPINES. 9920, July 17 at 1225 with ``Wonderful Words of Life`` hymn rendered in what sounded like Vietnamese, 1230 cut to ``Jesus Saves`` IS, rustic music and sermon. Bothered by bits of grind jamming, perhaps spurious from Cuba 9955 vs WRMI.

Per Aoki, this is FEBC, 100 kW, 280 degrees from Bocaue, in the Tai Dam language at 1215-1230 Thu-Fri-Sat, while on other days it`s in Roglai; and supposed to go off at 1230 except Sun-Wed when continuing until 1300 in Koho. So what was the 1230 language on this Saturday?? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 17920v, weak spur from KVOH 17775, July 16 at 1856; maybe a trace of match on 17630v, always weaker (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5110-, WBCQ, I think is normally on the air only Saturday and Sunday evenings for Area 51 –-- except the original live airing of Allan Weiner Worldwide, Friday evenings. UT July 17 at 0044 it`s detectable but unreadable, // better 7415. Compared to RHC 6110, WBCQ was slightly low in frequency.

9330-CUSB, with a bit of audio on the LSB too, is already on at 1115 July 17, tho the schedule claims Good Friends Radio Network is 13-04:
http://schedule.wbcq.com/main.php?fn=sked&freq=9330
Mentioned phone numbers including one in Australia, taking prayer requests.

I had not noticed this before, posted a month+ ago on WBCQ site:

``WBCQ Joins the Gulf Rescue Campaign
Posted June 11th, 2010 in Station News

WBCQ is joining the Gulf Rescue Campaign in association with the Sea Shepherd Society to assist in the Gulf disaster rescue operation. We need your support now to outfit our flagship, the M/S Katie, to assist in the Gulf disaster rescue operation.`` So is Katie down there rescuing wildlife by now? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5000, WWV announcement at 0116 July 17, and no doubt 16 minutes past all other hours: Attention: From 18 to 19 UT July 22 [Thursday], WWV and WWVH will be conducting a tsunami warning test (gist). During the entire hour, or only at 1816? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. DX test from KEVT 1210 Sahuarita AZ, which according to Paul Lotsof is about to close down, go out of business so the CE would be running 10 kW non-direxional day pattern UT July 17 at 0500-0700. Paul Walker found out that there would be sweep tones, helpful for DX IDing on the hourtops, July 17 and again on its final final night 48 hours later.

Missed checking at 0500 July 17 as I was still TVDXing Kansas, but tried 1210 from 0511 --- fortunately, no sign of KGYN Guymon OK, which must have axually been on its own night pattern, null-ENE! WPHT Philadelphia was dominant with Midnight Radio Network talk in English, and too close to collinear with AZ to null from here on the DX-398, but tropical music audible underneath it. Equally big problem is WOAI IBOC peaking at 1213, so better tuning down to 1209 kHz. At 0517, overblown Spanish announcement, no ID heard yet, as Philadelphia fades, then norteña music. 0520, got it! KEVT`s ``La Raza`` slogan and ``grupera`` which must be the proper term for its format. 0521 WPHT regains ascendancy with Nationwide ad (Glenn Hauser, of another Raza, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. Tropo enhancement from Kansas, UT July 17, first noticed at 0455 with antenna oppositeward toward OKC, nevertheless KSNC RF 22, 2-1 decoding from Great Bend. Not so good for closer Wichita market such as its parent KSNW RF 45, 3-1. RF 12 did display: DTV 33-1 KSCW DT, with nothing but black screen, i.e. transmitted that way as signal level was sufficient to decode if anything were being modulated.

Tropo enhancement from Wichita area holding up past 1500 UT July 17, Saturday. KPTS 8.3 with Create had Rudy Maxa on New Zealand South and North before and after 1500. Bug check: 8.3 Create has constant KPTS logo, PBS logo, atop tiny Hutchinson-Wichita in lower left, an unusual spot --- because the Create spiral logo is constant in lower right.

8.2, however, with Explore has KPTS in LR with almost invisible white Explore above it and even smaller Hutchinson-Wichita below it. Main channel 8.1 also with KPTS bug LR, next to PBS person-profile logo, and
www.kpts.org below it. Losing out, too weak and breaking up by 1530 as Sol burns off some humidity (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VENEZUELA [non]. 6060, July 17 at 1133, very poorly modulated signal. RNV relay via CUBA is normally here at 11-12, but it sure doesn`t sound like them, and I am wondering if post-sunrise remnants from Argentina are arriving in its absence. Not even certain it`s Spanish, as talk segments are much weaker than music, sounds like Zamfir`s pan-flute at 1135. 1138 it peaks at S9+10, but talk is just barely modulated; 1139 a bit of Zamfir sufficiently modulated. Meanwhile RHC itself is stronger on 6110-with CCI from CNR1 jamming and VOA Tinian; 6150, 6180 with ACI from NHK 6185. Yes, on 6060 it was RNV, at 1155 its IS and ID JBA, then what sounded like the same IS replayed but slower and at much lower pitch, off at 1156:30*.

Next transmission is 1200 on 11705: checked at 1202, modulation is also bad, but better than 6060. Could be out-of-phase stereo canceling itself out in audio chain. Greeting male-users and female-users on much stronger signal (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ZAMBIA. 4965, non-direxional 100 kW CVC, only extra-continental signal audible on 60m, July 17 at 0115, gospel rock but too much summer QRN level. It was #4 signal compared to WWCR 4840, WWV 5000 and Cuba 5025 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1580, KOKB Blackwell OK cooperated again this Saturday by deleting modulation, but keeping carrier on to muscle aside the local noise level, which was rather severe, so I strain to hear the Spanish station underneath. There it is again, July 17 at 1343; slogans shouted at 1345, but can`t make out any ID. This is on the E-W longwire and FRG-7; then I try in the yard DX-398. Nothing in the NW/SE null of KOKB, and the Spanish seems roughly E-W. It does fade completely out at times, and back in, so it`s likely remnant skywave, 2.5-3 hours after LSR, not groundwave.

One clue made it at 1407 during phone interview, mentioned ``a las 15 de la tarde``, which would more likely be a Mexicanism than an Americanism, such as XEDM Hermosillo, Sonora. Meanwhile I try to find a webstream for comparison, but no more luck than in 2007. Cantú`s audio link leads to a squatter.

Wikipedia says they do run a ``Radioperiódico`` Saturday and Sunday mornings. Still bits of signal when I quit at 1429. If this really is XEDM, of course it should be in Spanish every day, not just Saturday --- altho long ago in the borderblaster era I think it did have some English. When I have checked under KOKB carrier on weekdays I have only heard something in English (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 17895, steady open carrier at 1435 July 17; 1436 a bit of tone test, 1437 off. Probably VOA Greenville-B setting up for 1700-1730 English to Africa (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###
